Golf is the heart of Belfair. Its two Tom Fazio-designed championship courses were built to play very differently. The East Course is a links-style layout with open views, natural sand areas and native grasses, while the West Course offers a more traditional, manicured round framed by live oaks and tall pines.
Members also have a golf learning center and performance campus for lessons and practice, and a full-service golf shop. The golf calendar is busy year-round, with active men's and women's golf associations and a steady schedule of weekly games, couples' events and club championships. In 2019, Belfair hosted the PGA Professional Championship, one of the largest all-professional tournaments in golf, which was broadcast on Golf Channel.
Belfair's story begins in 1811, when a Savannah couple built a plantation here and named it by combining their family names. Today that history greets you at the gate: the Avenue of the Oaks, a half-mile canopy of century-old live oaks draped in Spanish moss, leads past lagoons and fairways to homes set on generous, wooded homesites.
The clubhouse is the social center of the community, with views over the gardens, the finishing holes of both courses and the Colleton River. Members dine at the 1811 Grille, a relaxed, pub-style dining room; The Bistro, a casual restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating at the Sports & Lifestyle Campus; and the fireside veranda overlooking the river. For celebrations, The Oaks banquet room seats up to about 200 guests, and The Magnolia offers a private dining room for wine dinners and gatherings.
Belfair's Sports & Lifestyle Campus includes a 6,500-square-foot cardio and training center with classes such as yoga, Pilates, spin and golf stretch, along with certified personal trainers, sports therapy and golf fitness programs. Members swim year-round in the indoor pool pavilion or relax by the outdoor pool, which also has a splash pad, and the community has an on-site spa, a dog park and a playground.
Racquet players have six Har-Tru tennis courts at the Sports & Lifestyle Campus plus grass courts in front of the clubhouse overlooking the Colleton River, with clinics, leagues and interclub play. Pickleball is one of the fastest-growing activities in the community, with seven dedicated courts, open play, socials and league matches. Bocce and basketball round out the lineup.
Homes range from golf cottages, a lower-maintenance option, to single-family homes and large custom estates of up to about 9,000 square feet with as many as six bedrooms. Homes have been built from 1995 to today, so buyers can choose between established homes with mature landscaping and newer construction, many with golf, lagoon or marsh views.
